Cardinal
Kate Kerames
A
sparkling ruby in a dull bush
Gray-green surrounds while he relishes his own
Radiance and whispers to
others, "hush",
"Look! I light up the
forest, I alone".
He commands, "Be still,
appreciate me."
"I bring a touch of fire
to this forest,"
"Lively and spry." Says
he innocently.
But oe'rlooks the Jay,
thinks him only a guest.
This wood is his, he
tolerates their presence.
A burning sapphire lands
near our red bird.
With his approach the
ruby's malice grows dense.
He lashes out, feels his
command unheard.
The blue feathers wilt as
red flows around,
Colors meld, purple
plumage lies aground.
