Stage Manager Responsibilities

TECHNICAL THEATRE LINKS

The backbone of the Staples Players Organization is its technical Crews.  All crews are headed by students (SENIOR MANAGERS and CREW HEADS) and are staffed with students as well.  However, all crews answer to and are supervised by Mr. Roth and Mr. Ziegahn.

Tech Hours

All members of Players will be required to put in a total of 15 tech hours each semester. These hours do not need to be for one specific crew and will be tabulated and reported by the senior managers of each crew.  The goal here is to form a community and to gain  respect for all work involved in putting a show together. Collaboration and cooperation between on stage and off stage workers is paramount to our success. Not contributing to the success of the whole may be grounds for dismissal from Players.

All Senior Managers should  clearly define their positions and the responsibilities of their crews in their MISSION STATEMENTS that will be posted on the web site. These statements will tell what the goals and responsibilities his or her crew is responsible for and approximate time and labor requirements for those responsibilities. First drafts of the "mission statements" are due to Mr. Roth by July 24 and final drafts are due by August 1.   This will help clarify exactly who is responsible for what aspect of the production.  If senior managers need examples please see the completed mission statements on the Arts and Graphics page and the Makeup page.

Senior Managers

Senior Managers are appointed by the previous senior managers with the approval of the Director and Technical Director of Players. They are responsible for appointing crew heads based on skill and dedication. The assumption is that crew heads will be trained, share responsibility and eventually become senior managers. Senior managers are expected to organize time and people effectively in order to meet the needs of each major production. This also means seeing to it that studio theatre and main stage production deadlines are met. Senior Managers must encourage a team effort. Techies (indeed all members of Players) are expected to be versatile and willing to help wherever the need be.  Senior Managers are responsible for working with the web crew to update their page on this site. Senior Managers are responsible for tabulating tech hours for all primary members of their crews and for collaborating with their adult mentor to be as effective as possible.

Adult Mentors

Each crew will have an adult mentor from the community. Hopefully this person who has real life experience in this field that they can share with the crew. The mentor is there to advise, teach, and help in whatever way is deemed necessary. THE MENTOR IS WORKING FOR AND WITH THE SENIOR MANAGER AND WILL IN NO WAY USURP HIS OR HER POWER. The senior manager will have say into what the mentor’s responsibilities are and will be supported if he or she feels that the mentor is not functioning in the way noted above. Senior managers may also have input into choosing the mentor for their crew.
