Take a few minutes and browse through the section of the
    New York TimesScience Times

  1. What are your first impressions of this section? Questions, comments…

  2. Skim through the section and make a list of different types of text and visuals you might
  3. read. (e.g. pictures, charts, article) Identify at least 8 different types of text.

  4. Chose five articles to examine a little more closely. What branch of science does each article relate to? What is the topic of the article?

   7.  A. Find the article on page F2, After Terrorist Attacks Studies… Notice the pulled quote, "Looking for hidden perils in the ash and dust of the disaster."
        B. Now, look at other articles with pulled quotes. What do you suppose is the purpose of pulled quotes?

   8. What does the graph show in the article, Pay Gap Remains…?

   9. If you had time, which article would you like to read in depth? Why?

   10. Your class will be using the Science Times each week for the next 10 weeks. What ideas or suggestions do you have for assignments or activities? What would you like to do with this resource?
