Nervous System
The nervous system has many functions. Three of the things that it is responsible for are sensory functions, integrative functions, and motor functions. The major organs of the nervous system are the brain, the spinal cord, diencephalon,and the brainstem. The nervous system gets the majority of its oxygen and food via the cerebral artery and most of its waste leaves the through the jugular vein. Most of the lymph is filtered in the palatine tonsil.
The brain is made up of the cerebrum and cerebellum. The cerebrum is separated into four major lobes, the frontal lobe, the parietal lobe, the occipital lobe, and the temporal lobe. The cerebrum interprets sensory impulses and controls emotions. The cerebellum is responsible for motor skills and the fine movement of skeletal muscle.
The diencephalon is separated into two portions, the thalamus and the hypothalamus. The Thalamus is responsible for relaying information from the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord. The other portion of the diencephalon, the hypothalamus is responsible for controlling homeostasis and regulating the endocrine system.
The brainstem is made up of the medulla, the pons, and the midbrain. The medulla is responsible for relaying sensory impulses between other parts of the brain and the spinal cord, it also controls heart beat, and breathing(diaphragm). The pons is also responsible for relaying messages within the brain as well as with the spinal cord. The midbrain relays information from the cerebral cortex to the pons and the spinal cord.
The spinal cord is a network of nerves that extend through the vertebral column. Branching off the spinal cord are nerves that control all of the functions of the body. The tibial and common peroneal nerves make the biceps femoris contract. The phrenic nerve causes the contraction of the diaphragm. The cardiac accelerator and the vagus nerves cause the heart to beat.
