Why did the south secede?

·        The South felt-outnumbered and –overpowered by the North

·        Ulysses grant was a very good general and was “pwning” the south

·        Abraham Lincoln stubbornly opposed having slavery in the northern states

·        The southern states wanted to continue having slavery instituted into the new states+

·        Slavery

·        Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation

·        Didn't agree with the decision

·        Had acres and acres of plantations they needed to staff

·        The South seceded due to the Union’s unrelenting force at Petersburg in

·        1865.

·        Confederates vs. Union

·        Union leader (Lincoln) wanted to emancipate slavery

·        Confederates (led by Jefferson Davis) wanted to keep slaves to work on their plantations and work for them

·        The Union was gaining ground and winning the war

·        The South seceded because they knew they did not want to abide by the Union laws about slavery so they separated

·        the south seceded because of tariffs. They also seceded because the north was fighting for justice and peace and wanted to free the slaves, and the south did not want to get rid of their slaves.

·        North wanted to abolish slavery, south still wanted slavery

·        North bothered south about property, women’s rights, voting, and slavery so south got annoyed

·        Considered themselves different from the north. Had different views and opinions. Thought they were better off as a new country

* Lincoln could make these decisions because he was president

* Do you make decisions if half of your country disagrees?

* Do you do what's right over what looks best?
