PEP Grant

As we wind down the final year of the Pep Grant here in Westport, we look back at some of the highlights it has provided us over the last three years and are grateful for the opportunity to grow our teachers and Physical Education Program.

Here are some highlights and results of the Grant, just to name a few:

  • Providing professional development in the form of local, state and national conferences for our health and Physical Education teachers.
  • Heart rate monitors, pedometers, and other technology to increase awareness and help students track their fitness and performance levels in Physical Education.
  • Rock/traverse walls and other outdoor recreation activities included across the district to expose students to alternative ways of keeping fit outside the Physical Education program.
  • Upgrading fitness centers across the district to provide more learning opportunities related to lifetime health and wellness.
  • Bringing in speakers and professors of higher education such as Dr. John Medina, Dr. Erin Centeio and Dr. Amanda Stanec to provide professional development for our staff and educational opportunities for the community as a whole.

Data collection has allowed us to track the overall health and wellness of our students throughout the course of the Grant. BMI stats for WPS compare favorably to state and national averages showing that Physical Education continues to be a reflection of the good things we are doing. There is always room for improvement but with the resources the Grant has provided us, we will continue to grow our staff and our Physical Education program so that our students are physically literate and understand the benefits of choosing a healthy lifestyle.
