Materials: Binder (class notes, homework, labs, Quizzes, Tests) pencils, pens, calculator.

QuizzesQuizzes are announced in advance.  You are responsible for all materials covered in class, in the text, in lab, and in homework. Refer to the Student Handbook and read it carefully concerning attendance and tardiness. Tests or quizzes missed due to an excused absence must be made up on the day you return to school.  No test or quiz will be given if the absence is determined by the Dean’s office to be unexcused. (This becomes a zero.)

Exams: June 15th (Period 7); June 18h (Period 3) Unless there are snow days.

Lab:   Written lab reports are required for all labs using the laboratory format. It should be clear, concise and written so that anyone could read it and understand what you are saying. Labs missed due to excused absence must be made up as soon within a week. It is your responsibility to make the necessary arrangements.  See me for schedule information.  All labs will be made up within seven days of your return to school from your excused absence. This material is included on tests and quizzes.

Lab partners will be randomly selected for each lab and both members of the team are expected to share in the work.  You will also write your own individual lab report; your data charts should match but that is it!

Remember that all biology labs will meet for the full 80 minute period, once a week.

No food or drinks are allowed in the Biology Lab.  This includes coffee, soda, breakfast items, etc.

Bottled water should be in your backpack during class because our classroom is a laboratory.

Homework: Homework will be assigned to reinforce the concepts you should be learning and to let you recognize what you do and don’t know. When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.   Also, pop quizzes are given often and tell me which students thoroughly do their homework.  In the upper right hand corner of ALL your homework papers, the following heading should appear:  your name, period, date & assignment (page #, questions).

Example;                Jim Snodgrass

Period 2

September 8, 2007

p.6, 1-3; p.13, 1-3

This is to make it easier to study for a quiz.  When you are absent please hand in on your return.  Absent work becomes a zero if the student never hands it in.  (You have one week to turn in absent homework.)

When homework is more than one page in length, they must be either paper clipped or stapled together.  Homework, labs*, and quizzes should be done in ink, unless otherwise stated.  (*calculations, problems, etc. may be done in pencil)

PowerPoint Project: This is a long-term assignment due in January, which will be presented to the class.   You can choose to conduct research on a problem or a scientific collection.  This can be done through the use of our own lab or another, for example, the Nature Center in Westport.   If you would rather collect and identify plants (common and scientific names on each label), there are thousands of groups you can focus on.   For example, salt marsh grasses can be collected, identified, pressed in the school’s herbariums, and made into a permanent collection.  Research Poisonous House & Garden Plants, Poisonous Wild Plants of North America, etc.

Class Presentation: Monday, January 8th

You and I are a team with individual tasks and goals that further your education.  If you or I are not present in class, learning cannot occur.  I will make every effort to be in class and on time each and every day.  You must also!   You are expected to be in your seat at the beginning of the scheduled class with your homework out.  If you run into a problem remember, I am there to help.  I am available after school for extra help (2:15-2:45), except when I have meetings. Students should make appointments.  Don't be afraid to ask for help. I will be using Blackboard which you can use to ask me questions or schedule an extra help meeting.
